SCGS Amalgamated Index – About This Resource

The Amalgamated Index brings together a wide range of South Canterbury genealogical sources into one searchable name index. It is designed to help researchers quickly identify where a person’s name appears across many of the Society’s collections, both historic and modern.

What the Index Contains

Each entry in the index typically includes:

  • Surname
  • Given name
  • Approximate year
  • Source name (the collection the entry came from)
  • Reference details (such as register numbers, page numbers, folders, or database IDs)

Entries are drawn from many SCGS collections, including:

  • School admission records
  • Church registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials
  • Shipping and passenger records
  • Timaru Herald birth, death, and obituary notices
  • Funeral service sheets
  • Biographical files (TCC)
  • Early settler and pioneer indexes
  • Local history collections
  • Other verified SCGS databases currently being digitised and standardised

The source field shows where the original record lives, and the reference fields help our volunteers locate the exact folder, book, register, or database entry for that individual.

Important

The Amalgamated Index is not the full record. It is a guide pointing to where more detailed information can be found. Many collections remain protected or partly unpublished, so the Society provides access through volunteer lookups.
